HOLY CRAP!
It's been 24 hours since I saw Star trek XI and I'm still having flashbacks. This film is like having every episode of all the TV series compressed into two hours. What a rush. It's a complete reworking of the Star trek universe just like They did for Battlestar Galactica except where BSG went for grunge, Trek has gone to a brave new future where everything in the Federation is bright and clean except the hearts of men (er... sentient beings).
Unfortunately, there's a strong echo of Voyager's Year of Hell episodes in which a dude's wife is killed and he uses his advanced spaceship to travel through time and disrupt the galaxy. Revenge, you gotta love it. Not. Fortunately, ILM has done a hell of a job creating the special effects, from ray guns to spaceships on planets to arcologies to orbital sky diving. Now there's an extreme sport worth doing! Another good bit is the performances by the young actors portraying old favourites, especially Karl Urban's proto-grumpy Leonard McCoy (who always had the best lines).
The best thing that I can say about this movie is that there was so much going on that I need to go again, just to catch all the bits that I missed the first time round. That's got to be good for the box office.
The science fiction movie Star trek XI is directed by JJ Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban.
